FLOOD OF FAKE MORGAN DOLLARS FROM CHINA

MORGAN DOLLAR COLLECTORS BEWARE! There are bad times ahead for collectors of the Morgan Silver Dollar. I have been following just a portion of the hundreds, and more likely, thousands of COUNTERFEIT Morgan Dollars being sold on okay for the past several months. Most of these fake coins are being sold in one day auctions by sellers from China! Now I am finding an ever increasing number of these fake coins being sold on okay by sellers in the United States. Most of these coins are not that hard to detect by a experenced collector of Morgans, but the beginning collectors are being taken in by these coins and are throwing their money away!
Some of the signs of a fake Morgan are the misformed numbers in the dates on the obverse, and misformed letters such as the RIB in PLURIBUS on the reverse. Most of these fakes have a distinct toning that just dosen't look right, and they appear to be cast, instead of being struck.
These coins often have a buy price, or opening bid that is very low, and a shipping price that is quite high. A lot of the listings have the bidders IDs hidden, and the sellers feedback is hidden. Run a search for Morgan Dollars, and take a look at the ones with sellers from China. You will see what I am talking about.
Now here is the part that scares the heck out of me, lately I have noticed these coins are being manufactured much better, and are harder to detect. These guys in China are refining their skill at our cost. If this flood of fakes keeps up, the beginning collector is going to start to have doubts about all the coins on okay, and a lot are going to stop buying on okay, or give up collecting gepletely. This is hurting the sellers of genuine coins too, because money is being spent on these fakes that would otherwise be spent on the genuine coins they sell.
I have notified okay of at least a hundred of these auctions, and some have been canceled, but the buyer keeps listing more. The only solution I can think of is to ban all coin sales from sellers in China, and for okay to employ someone who is experenced in collecting coins, and can spot these fakes, and when these coins are found listed, ban that seller from okay at once, and forever! This is a serious problem to all coin collectors, and dealers, and is really going to hurt everyone if not stopped soon!
It looks like it is going to take some real effort from the buyers, and the sellers of Morgan Dollars on okay to stop this flood of fakes. If enough okayers will contact okay, and voice their concern about these counterfeit coins, perhaps okay will start addressing the problem. Until then, take a real close look at that Morgan Dollar before you bid or buy, and if the price seems to good to be true, it probably is.
