All of these radios are high drain on batteries, and this one is no exception. Get NiMH rechargeables if you buy this product.
The advertised range on all GMRS bubble pack radios is nonsense--unless you are in a tall building or at sea, you won't get anywhere near the range any of these radios advertise.
But the GXT500 will give you the best. Expect at least a couple of miles in dense urban settings.
The built in weather radio is a nice plus.
By federal law, you need a license to operate these radios--but over 90% of users don't get one. Enforcement is nearly nonexistent. However, it is good manners to behave like a licensed user--don't sing or swear or rebroadcast radio or tv, and don't intentionally interfere with anyone.
