lining question

I have two fully-lined, crochet sheath dresses. The linings are sewn closed all around but are a bit bigger than the dresses. Nothing hangs out - just an inch or so of excess fabric floating around. Does that sound right? They're both made by the same seamstress. They're too small for me to try on and see what happens and my backless half-form is no help. Thanks for any comments - mrs.m

Any Thoughts On 80s Fringed Black Leather Jackets?

I have a number of 80s black leather biker jackets that have fringe and conchas. I've checked completeds and I see that little black leather jackets are doing pretty okay but I don't even see much with the fringe on them. need suggestions for shoes/purses/accessories references

I posted this on the shoes, purses, and accessories board but I haven't found them to be as helpful as you all. Jsales0 (and Rockeygirl) and were helpful with some modern shoe questions I had otherwise that board was not very helpful yet. This request is for both modern and vintage shoes/purses/accessories. Any good websites to help figure out type of shoes/purses/accessories and the terms for certain features of these items. I was having a hard time with modern shoes and would like to learn more (of course I'd also like info on vintage shoes but I own more modern shoes....if they are vintage then I just haven't realized it). Here's what I posted on the other board: Does anyone have any recommendations for a website that is a good reference for shoe terminology? Let's say someone has some pointy toe shoes and wants to know the proper term (I think winklepicker)...is there a site that has pictures/drawings and/or descriptions. I had to get help on several shoes (couldn't think of the word perforated, lol, for example) and it would be great if people had suggestions of good website for shoes. I'll have to check to see if any are tacked to the top but also resources/references for handbags and accessories. Please help Thanks in advance, Vicky

Stockings Newbie..Can you help? Interesting seams...

Hi all! I have sold just the regular seamless stockings in packages so far...but I am unfamiliar with the seamed ones with cuban heels and interesting details. Hopefully someone can help with describing these because I'm lost! TIA 1) Is there a name for this detail? It's hard to see but there are 2 thin vertical lines on the heel 2)What do you call this kind of black detail? In completeds someone called something like this a 'manhattan seam" 3)Is this a 'keyhole'? What is it for? 4) Now for the dumb question...alot of the stockings I have are marked 'Irregulars'. Is that the same as they have today in discount stores when an item isn't perfectly produced, or is it something different?

Cannot resist roses even though I rarely do long gowns. I am thinking 80s just because of the overdone lace and super romantic look. EMERGENCY - Vintage Patterns/Gargage Sale Prices?

Lovers and Sellers of Vintage Clothes and Accessories - Help! My neighborhood is having it's First Annual Neighborhood sale and my next door neighbor needs my help pricing her vintage patterns. She is in her 70's and has been sewing all her life. There are probably 200 patterns... dozens from each decade from the 1930's through the 1980's. I don't really know what exactly to tell her. I know on eBay the market would decide what a pattern is worth. And if I had the time I would list them for her. Interesting Convo with a dealer, my patterns are staying here I guess LOL

So I have been trying my best to get all my patterns sorted and out the door.I have not bought any new ones for quite some time.I am basically selling off what I have and then I am done with them. They are too time consuming. I answered an ad that said "top $$ paid for patterns".The lady called me today, very nice lady.I guess she is also buying them to sell on the internet, and they have a couple ebay stores (I still have no idea who she is). I guess, and this is NOT the way I got any of my patterns she gets them from stores who (I was not clear on this) put them aside maybe in boxes? I know here I do buy them individually..I was not aware stores did this. She was interested in uncut ones only (how many vintage are uncut?) and would pay about 10 CENTS each. Now I expected NOT a pot of gold but for the older ones I thought I would sell them by box.So for 100 patterns I would get 10.00. So no.I will be keeping them. But if anyone is looking, I likely have it! I can tell you, I am not at all opposed to resale and buying for resale..but I have bought box lots from sellers for a bit more and was happy.Anyway.

Jenelle of California help on fabric and date

The label on this is Jenelle of California. I've had a lot of lingerie from that maker but nothing quite like this Palazzo Jumpsuit. The fabric is throwing me as it has a rayon cotton feel to it, the outside sparkles and the inside looks like barkcloth. Do I list under lingerie? Or jumpsuit? Also what do I call the sleeves (Kimono) ? I believe its 60's, nylon back zipper and empire attached belt, bodice is lined in what looks like a silk/rayon. Looks a little Hawaiian. Shipping Way More than eBay Shipping Calculator Figured - WWYD?

I sold a larger item recently, and the ebay shipping calculator on my listing figured way under what the actual shipping costs are turning out to be ($75 under). I offered to fully refund the buyer her money, but the buyer really wants the item and does not want a refund. So I let her know that I still would be happy to ship it to her if she wanted to pay the difference in shipping costs. At first she said she would do that as she really really wants the item, but then she spoke to an ebay representative who told her i am required to ship it to her for the amount the shipping calculator quoted her - and to have her pay more is in violation of ebay policies. I have had issues with the shipping calculator not quite figuring the shipping accurately before and have just eaten the small difference. But I have already lost money on the item, am not charging any handling charge for the extensive packing materials this item is requiring, and honestly do not have a dime to put towards the $75 difference in shipping charges, as every cent I made in the past week went to bills. The buyer requested that I call her so that we can work it out over the phone. But I don't know what else to say but what I already have. I have apologized extensively. What would you do?

Vintage Featured Clogged With Reproduction Miscatagorized

Wow, Factories selling under vintage era catagories Suck! Now with the fabulous new page views getting to see maybe 5 featured instead of all, It really is a letdown to see eBay allow Vintage reproductions /importers mass manufacturers advertise in Incorrect catagories rather than in reproduction category and clog the featured ads. I just saw 4 reproductions and 1 genuine vintage in featured, NONE listed as reproduction catagory, all repros listed under various eras meant for authentic. Guess if they pay to feature, they are allowed to miscatagorize and steal views and business from regular sellers who actually carry true Vintage but with a factory/mass advertising budget. Way to send Vintage category down the corporate toilet. Are any other sellers/shoppers disgusted with blatant misuse of catagories and they being allowed to clog Vintage featured with Factory New reproductions> Dealers who sell Genuine Vintage and try to do an honest business should be screaming about this, the featured changes hurt sales enough and with economy, doesn't help to have those who are spending money fished off the top by miscatagorizing /misleading overseas factories flooding Vintage featured. Not very honest and not fair to authentic vintage sellers.

very pretty, tiny rayon half slip. Lots of questions!

I have had this for 20 years. Very pale green. One of those things that you love but know it will never fit! The lace is deep at 4 inches but I do not know what it is It has a heavy texture on net. The slip is marked, rayon and Melinda on a fabric-paperish tag that is stiff and a single layer. The elastic is doubled over the fabric. It does feel as if it was not used. Small metal beaded/mesh coin purse, A question, or two.

Are baby mesh and beaded bags the same thing ? I have had a few Art Deco mesh bags but this one is different. It's made of tiny beads strung tightly together to form the purse, not sewn on a backing like most beaded bags. It "feels" like mesh, the beads seem to be metal but no metal frame and the colored beads that form the flowers are on the inside, it's not painted on. This is a small one, a coin purse I think. Should I call this a "Beaded metal purse" or can I use 'mesh' in the title or description ? Also, how old do you think this is ? Deco ?

More vintage hats-more questions.

Hello, You helped me a month or so ago with some hats and I was wondering if somebody would be so kind and answer a few questions I have on some more hats I found. Can vintage hats be cleaned (either professionally or DIY)? I have this first hat here, which is a great hat in great shape except it looks like its dirty from being stored for years. Do you think it would be worth listing (as in getting at least 5-7 bucks for it) as it looks now? Pics are clickable by the way. Also this wool beret-Looks like the moth were starting to get to it. The holes dont go all the way thru-looks like the moths just nibbled a bit. Probably not worth listing? This hat i just love! Still has the original tag. Would 1960-70's be correct? Any way to figure out what kind of fur this is?

OT: Paypal shipping label address question

Every now and then I try to print out a shipping label on Paypal and it tells me that the city does not match the zip code, and suggests a correct city. (It's usually the next city or town over, I assume the postal zones changed and the shipee never updated it). But here's the thing: it will literally not allow me to print out the label unless I change the city. If the address then does not match the confirmed address, doesn't that mean I'm not covered under seller protection? Again, the changes are minor, and the package would get to the buyer anyway, but I don't know how to handle this when it happens. It usually means an email to the buyer, etc etc. Annoying!

Just Venting!!

Venting about buyers who leave neutral or negative feedback without contacting the seller first..... I sold a 50s wedding dress last week. If you've ever sold a wedding dress you know how hard it is to pack one with all of the material. Unless you use a huge box, there just isn't any way to make it pretty. So I did the best I could and packed for protection. I even put a note in the box that it wasn't they way I like to display the item but with all the material it was the best way to ship. I woke up to a neutral feedback today, I know not horrible. But no contact from the buyer saying they were unhappy. The feedback simply says that their favorite part of the gown was damaged due to my packing. I suspect it is the flowers that were at the back waistline of the gown. And if so, I also suspect all they need is steamed to revive them. I do wish buyers would contact sellers before doing this. Like I said, just venting, so thanks for listening.

SELLERS: How does 90s qualify as

As a buyer I find it extremely irritating to weed through all the 90s junk labeled "vintage," and I wish that sellers would stick to the following to avoid confusion: Anything before the 1920s is an antique. (100 years old or more) Anything from the 1920s- early 1960s really deserves the label "VINTAGE" (50 years old or more) Anything late 1960s to 1970s= retro. It's getting to the point where the 80s could be labeled as retro as well. (30 years old or more) But the 90s? Please, those of you who think of 90s clothing as vintage come off as unknowledgeable. A vintage collector does not want to weed through all those irritating mislabels. You can bet it discourages me from looking at the other items on your seller's list.

Lingerie question: This may seem silly, but....

What is the difference between a full length nightgown and a "full sweep" nightgown? I know many of the popular Olgas are listed as full sweep - and it seems that anything else that is listed as full sweep sells for much more than the regular old full length nightgowns. Is full sweep more of a train? I just acquired about 20 stunning (most from Saks) nightgowns and slips and I think this information could be very valuable in the listing process! Also, what is a crystal pleat? Does the type of lace matter? I know many laces are very valuable, but is this true when they're on clothing too? Most of the lingerie that I purchased is from the 1940-50s, if that helps at all! Are there any general guidelines I should follow or keep in mind when listing? I can post photos, if anybody wants them, but everything looks so dumpy on my dress form, photos just won't do these beauties justice! TIA!

Looking for a consignor, maybe...

I'm not sure if that's the proper term or route. I started on Ebay several years ago and settled on authentic designer bags, and I'll continue with bags. What I've found is that I'm drawn to vintage items. I tried to sell some, and only a few items did well. I decided to stay away from vintage, but it breaks my heart to find something so amazing and leave it behind. With that said, I'm wondering if someone here would be interested in consigning my finds that I just can not stand to leave behind. I'm sure you all understand when I say how interesting it is to hold a piece of history. A beautiful piece of history. I have not been able to do justice for my pieces, and will not try to sell them on my own. This is my last ditch effort to have a good reason to buy them. (for instance, yesterday I came across the sweetest pair of vanity fair house slippers, and smok'n hot pumps by Oconner

Maybe repro, I'm not good with anything older than 20s. I got this from a theater company sell off, they had tons of vintage. This one had a zipper put in recently, it's nylon. Wow, Just Wow. WWYD Re: Response to This Email?

I honestly am sitting here shellshocked at the tone of this email I just received. I would never in a hundred million years knowingly deceive someone. I'm just speechless at this point. I considered simply refunding and letting her keep the dress, but honestly, I would prefer the dress back if I do refund. Besides that, I don't think a fvf credit would even work in doing a mutual. Based on the tone of her email I don't think she'd even agree to it. I haven't as yet responded because my initial response would likely be an unprintable knee jerk reaction and I don't want to do that. But in an attempt to be diplomatic, how would you all respond to this email, or would you even respond at all? For what its worth I've never been to the country she suggested and I've never mentioned my feedback in any of my listings because that could change on a dime with just one pms'ed person! and she writes: Not especially appreciative about all your "vintage" references in the description when in hand the garment is obviously new. The 100% positive reference in your description is deceptive because a neutral or negative from the buyer is not acceptable. Am keeping the dress because I like it enough to wear. Just don't appreciate being fooled. I was bidding on a vintage piece. Considering this a lesson learned. Really wanted vintage with the smaller stitches and better made garment. Will not buy from you again. Hey, have a good time on your next trip to Oaxaca when you pick up your next load of "vintage" newly made garments. May want to tell the embroiderers to at least clip their stitches when through with a color a little closer to the fabric so it's not so obviously new. But I'm sure you're not really worried about that anyway.

YSL rive gauche suede dress - wahoo? Is problem fatal?

I picked up this suede dress yesterday Overall the condition would seem unworn (no straining of any seams, no soil on neckline or edges, the belt having no signs of wear whatsoever) EXCEPT there is a paler block in the nap on the right front - and on the leather underside you can see where there's something that's caused a stain. Is this a wahoo or a boo hoo? Is there anything I can do to spot clean this stain or do you think it's actually bleached the nap of the suede although the leather underside seems darker?

found a steamer trunk of old quilts! some questions....

For some reason the last few days have been busy buying ones. Checked out an attic today, and it was looking pretty grim, until we opened an old steamer trunk and found it full of quilts. I know nothing about quilts and would love some info. (I'll also post on the textiles board). I suspect they're not that old (maybe 40s/50s/60s?). Some of them are patchwork and some just gave little tufts of yarn - what are those called? The first one is MINT - wrapped in plastic and never taken out. The simple tufted ones are twin, and the others are larger (double or queen?). Thanks for any info. Any winners here?

Pinup bathing suits (collector question)

My mother really wants to go to Spain, so everybody's birthday and Christmas present is that we are all going to Barcelona in August. I am not complaining-- I think it's a great idea. However there is the eternal question of what to wear. I think I want a vintage bathing suit (European attitudes towards nudity notwithstanding). My plan was to wear an old bikini top of my mother's with a pair of boy shorts, now available by themselves in contemporary stores, but it she seems to have lost it. -How difficult or expensive is it to replace that gathers/ "smocking" that some suits have on the sides? -The other issue is replacing the lining, because I know that you can wash it so that it is sterile and all, and I know that my being grossed out is a culturally constructed taboo, but I just can't get past it. -How difficult/expensive is it to replace the lining in a one-piece? A bikini? -What about the bra? I have heard that the material in some of the cups can decay into something that is not good for you, plus I do not have the assets for most of the bras that come in vintage bathing suits anyway. -how do people feel about this type of alteration? It seems to me that, if what you replace the lining with is something less reactive, it could still fall in the category of restoration/preservation, especially if you keep records of what you are doing, and I am that much of a dork. And finally... - Is it just me or do midcentury Jantzen bathing suits seem to run big? P S I would never let a vintage bathing suit come into contact with pool water. However, it may not be much of an issue, as I have no intention of letting my below-waist-length hair come into contact with pool water either, and I don't know that I could get it into a swim cap. PPS Now that I think of it, how do you use a swim cap, if I do decide to get a conventional swimsuit?

OT: attic find - mandolin carved w/ teenager names

This was in the attic with the quilts, had to share. Is this instrument a mandolin? I was told it came from Germany, WWI, and it has a maker's name but I can't quite make it out aside from "____lang". Many years later it was given to some kids in the 60s who carved all sorts of names on it (Beatles, Elvis, their own names, etc). Any thoughts on value, etc? Thanks.

I looked this label up and found a few other Lakeland Clicker jackets here selling very well. They were listed as "hot rod" jackets. Any idea why, and can this be called that too? Search problems - vtg vs vintage panties

There's been a bug for at least a year that I'm aware of that just got fixed. On listings for vintage panties, the abbreviation for vintage ebay 'gave' us didn't work. If you listed vtg panties the only people who would see your item in their search results were those who did a search for vtg panties. If they searched for vintage panties - you weren't there. So it's now fixed and vtg panties returns the same amount as vintage panties. The word 'panties' got on one of ebay's 'blacklists'. This particular blacklist will not return the expanded search results - no idea why but you know there is no logic any more with ebay. The only other word I'm sure of that's on that particular blacklist is dior but there are more, no idea how many. I just got an email from marnisue telling me about the fix and she also said they were 'planning' on fixing the search for items on that blacklist but had no ETA as to when it would get fixed. ebay's new motto, "If it ain't broke, break it!"

******* Coming Attractions Thread 7/13 through 7/19 *******

Welcome all to the PGP Coming Attractions Thread, I will start a new one every week on Monday. The rules are: 1. No more than two pieces per post and no more than three posts per week. (That way we are not jamming up the board and it puts everyone on the same page.) For a total of three posts per week and a show of six items (1 photo per item) - so choose wisely. 2. No long drawn out descriptions. If the piece is signed, just simply name the maker, or unsigned, or material (glass, porcelain, earthenware...). Keeping It Simple. 3. Pictures should be no bigger than 450 X 450 at 72 DPI so the board isn't broken and our dial up friends can easily view. 4. Items posted can not be up for sale yet but can be up during the week it is posted. 5. Only ebay sales posted here please! No auction links, photos only. 6. Please, only post within ebay rules - for example, make sure you only post your own photos, ones that you have personally taken! Remember this is your opportunity to show fellow collectors what you will be listing on ebay this week. Have fun! Marie

Very Old ? Flute Cut Decanter with Steeple Stopper

First, let me apologize for the lights showing in the photos--this decanter is too tall for my set up, but the glass shows pretty well. Months ago I bought a lot of early 1800's decanters. This one was in the lot. I've never seen one like it, except tonight when thumbing through Dorothy Daniel's book, she shows some West Virginia and Pittsburgh decanters with steeple stoppers that remind me of this one. It's 15" tall to the top of the stopper. The bottom is smooth but has a ground outer ring with tons of shelf wear. The cuts of the flutes are well done, but I notice that they're not exactly the same width. Anyone out there able to determine if this is an early piece? Thanks, Janice

Need help w discription of this vintage 70s? top!

It is white gauze but no labels but so romantic! I, however, have gone brain dead. What is the cuff called? It is a circular cuff. The angle is distorting the porportion a bit. The bodice has a bunch of small ruffles a bit like a bib front. Not quite a tux

Vintage Psychadelic Jumpsut

I don't normally sell clothing, but I bough this for my wife to wear while performing at a sixties reunion concert. Does anyone think that this would be worth listing? Am I correct that it would be called a jumpsuit? Am I correct that it is from the sixties? Anyone know who Barbara is? If it is worth listing do you have any ideas for a title? What is it made out of Nylon? It is not marked for size so how would I measure it so that I can help people determine the size? TIA

The estate I purchased this from had many hats which I know nothing about and the clothes came from the 40's to the 60's. Any ideas on date and type of hat. TIA

question about label/postage holders

Has anyone used the clear plastic customs form "holder", Customs Form Envelope 2976E, to ship domestically? I now print my shipping on line and wondered if anyone had experience using the aforementioned clear "envelope" to adhere the paypal address/postage to the package. I currently use priority tape and clear packing tape to adhere the address/postage to the package but when posting international items I noticed this form holder and became curious about using it for domestic shipping. The usps website mentions "This envelope is to be used in conjunction with either Form 2976-A or Form 6182" however one of the postal employees said he didn't know of any problem using it for domestic shipping and said that if I couldn't get it free on line he would give me the envelopes. I suspect that the us postal guidelines/rules says it is only for use with those two customs forms. The envelope itself doesn't have any clear restrictions printed on it except a generic statement about how express mail, priority mail....packaging is the property of the USPS and is provided soley for use with the above named services. Therefore, if one is shipping priority mail to a domestic address, the wording on the label implies it is acceptible. However the website (usps) says it is only for those 2 customs forms. The envelope says "dispatch note, customs, forms, etc., documents enclosed". One can pick these clear envelopes up at the post office and never go to the website however ignorance doesn't always work as an excuse. Any experience or thoughts on using these clear envelopes to hold the postage printed from the paypal site? Thanks, Vicky

Possibly Authentic Chanel?

I just found a great fine lightweight knit sweater at a second hand store. The label is missing, but it has the Chanel embroidered logo on front. It is black above the chest as well as the sleeves, red from the bust area down. There is a white embroidered Chanel logo under the neck at center. I wish I could post a photo, but don't know how! The sweater is obviously high quality, looks as good inside as out, and it has a tag on the inside seam that says (in green writing) "P e n" Made in Thailand. 100% Cotton. Could it be a Chanel?

My second day at the

Well, I was a little less overwhelmed today, but I'm pretty sure I threw out my back from sifting through racks of clothing. I was coughing and sneezing up a storm too! lol. It took me 4 hours this time around, but I'm still not anywhere close to finished. Today's finds that are "for sures" for the exhibit? An insane electric blue Giorgio di Sant'Angelo 70's evening gown that I don't know what to make of (lots of scraves attached plus an extra piece I've no idea what to do with. lol.) 3 pale pink 50's ballgowns - 1 with sequined pailettes inside tulle layers, 1 with pink flocked layers of fluff, and one HUGE one with a train made of a million layers of ruffles. An exquisite wild silk print cocktail dress by Oscar de la Renta (possibly circa 1969 when he first ventured on his own.) A stunning navy grecian draped evening gown by Malcom Starr. A steel blue late 40's very sculptural ballgown that reminds me of something Charles James would do. Some insane 1950's bombshell wiggle dresses that would suit Marilyn Monroe. A crazy 1950's layered petal dress that is shaped like an egg. Wednesday I'm going back to look at coats, hats, shoes and other accessories. I have pics, but they're awful because I just snapped them to remember what I had. I'm gonna need to figure out this Sant'Angelo piece - does anyone know of a resource to figure out how the dresses were supposed to be worn? The extra pieces and sashes are freaking me out. okay, off to bed. Melanie

How To List Something

Thanks in advance to all who have time to respond. I didn't post a picture as I don't think it matters and you all can tell me what to do without seeing the item. I have a pair of sandals I want to list. They are brand new contemporary wedgies but they definitely are "vintage inspired". I know that I cannot use "vintage" in the title but is there an allowable keyword that I can use? Is "retro inspired" allowed? Or, I guess I could just list them as wedges and say something like "stylistic nod to the past" in the body of the listing. Any suggestions of how one should title "vintage inspired" items? I don't want to mislead or misrepresent in any way. If the answer is to just list them as" Perf ankle strap wedge sandals" for example or something like that I understand but if there are allowable keywords to cover vintage looking items I'd love suggestions.

Dumb question of the day - do you look at how many 'views' your items get?

Or am I the only one who doesn't? It's meaningless to me since I know I get counted when I'm doing research and have no intention of buying anything from anyone. I kinda just don't get the whole drift of having it - I can't correlate it to anything useful - so what am I missing? Am I missing something? ebay's new motto, "If it ain't broke, break it!"
